A BRIEF HISTORY

Tabor Colleges In Australia

Tabor College commenced in 1979 in Adelaide, South Australia. It was founded by Pastors Barry Chant and Dennis Slape, who committed themselves to a vision of a Christian education centre where Christians of all denominations would receive teaching from the Word of God and training for ministry in the power of the Holy Spirit.

By the late 1980s Tabor College in Adelaide was attracting students from various parts of Australia. A decision was made to begin to establish campuses in other States. In 1988 a campus was established in Melbourne and in 1992 campuses were opened in both Sydney and Perth. Tabor College Adelaide commenced an annexe in Hobart in 2000 and began involvement in teacher education in Indonesia in 2003.

Currently, over 1,500 students are enrolled in the College’s on-campus and distance education programs, and there are many full-time, part-time and visiting teachers, administrative staff and voluntary helpers.

Recent Developments

For some time, the College’s National Office in Adelaide was responsible for the accreditation and registration process for all the College’s courses and campuses, and the courses offered by campuses in different States were essentially the same. However, as the College grew and its campuses diversified and developed their own distinctive characteristics and emphases, the College decided to decentralise to a significant extent.

The branches of the College formerly know as "campuses" became known as "colleges". Each of these colleges has its own Chief Executive Officer or Principal, is managed by its own State Board and is a separately incorporated body. The colleges are linked on a strong bond of fellowship and meet continue together on a regular basis. Today, the Tabor Colleges in different States generally operate on the basis of separate accreditation and registration with regard to their higher education courses.

The motto of the College is "witnesses of His majesty" (2 Peter 1:16).
