December 2007

As we break for the year…and Christmas beckons

Last weekend I took some time aside for a spiritual retreat, just south of Sydney. The weekend was spent in silence, although there were brief times for reflection and direction. It was the first time I had done something like this so close to Christmas, which is typically a ‘crazy time’ of getting things completed at work, buying Christmas presents and planning holidays or summer jobs around the house. The weekend afforded me the luxury of leaving all these things behind and simply focusing on Christ.

One morning we were offered some words of CS Lewis (Letters of CS Lewis, p. 248) to reflect upon:

When I have learnt to love God better than my earthly dearest, I shall love my earthly dearest better than I do now. In so far as I learn to love my earthly dearest at the expense of God and instead of God, I shall be moving towards the state in which I shall not love my earthly dearest at all. When first things are put first, second things are not suppressed but increased.

CS Lewis reminds us of the importance of placing God first in our lives, and his words remind me of Matthew 6:33: “but seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things will be added unto you”.

May this Christmas season be a time in which we place God above all else, remembering that it is the birth of Jesus, the Christ, that causes us to celebrate at this time and throughout each year.

On behalf of all the staff at Tabor College NSW, I pray that you and your loved ones will experience the saving love and grace of Jesus Christ this Christmas. As we celebrate his birth, may he be born anew in our hearts.

James Fitzgibbon
General Manager

What happens to student evaluations?

As you are aware, at the end of each subject, students complete module evaluation forms. We would like to thank you for the effort and honesty displayed in your responses. We feel that it’s important for you to understand what happens to these forms once they are completed.

  1. The forms are reviewed by your lecturer, so that the feedback can be incorporated into the lecturer’s evaluation of the subject, which is also completed at the end of each semester.
  2. The student feedback forms are then reviewed by the Academic Dean, who will incorporate key aspects of your feedback, together with suggested action plans, into an Academic Standards Report.
  3. This report is reviewed by the College’s External Academic Advisory Committee (EAAC), a body which includes academics from the University of Sydney, University of NSW, University of Western Sydney and Australian National University.
  4. The comments from EAAC and a summary of the findings are presented to the Board of Tabor College NSW.

Hopefully you can see that this process ensures your feedback is being heard and action plans are being implemented to address your concerns wherever feasible. Your feedback is being raised at the highest levels of college governance, which ensures both accountability and continual improvement in the services provided by Tabor College NSW.
